This course is divided into two parts:

PART 1 - ADVANCED PHLEBOTOMY & CANNULATION - online (eLearning) - home study

PART 2 - CANNULATION PRACTICAL SESSIONS - classroom

When booking this course you will receive a link to complete your eLearning modules (emailed to you within 1-2 working days) and your course location with joining instructions.

PART 1: Complete the online easy-to-follow Advanced Phlebotomy & Cannulation Course on your computer or tablet and in your own time. The course can be completed in stages - you have up to 8 weeks to complete the course in full. Once completed you will immediately be able to download your pass certificate. (Your new accredited certificate will be posted to you within 8 weeks.)

Part 1 must be completed before attending Part 2
The nationally recognised and accredited certificate (awarded by the Open College Network) can be added to your existing certificate credit value (cumulative credits), and these may also count towards other similar college or university courses.

This course is designed to supplement our Introduction to Phlebotomy Course and is a natural progression route for both trainee as well as practicing and experienced phlebotomists wishing to expand on their existing phlebotomy qualifications. The course is also open to anyone completing another (approved) provider's phlebotomy training course.

At the end of each e-learning section you have between 4 and 6 multiple choice questions to answer, with a passmark of 65%. You can re-sit each section up to 2 times.

PART 2: Once you have completed Part 1 you will attend your chosen classroom location (1 full day) where you will consolidate your theory and focus on developing your cannulation skills.

Although we will cover some theory in the classroom the majority of your day will be spent developing your cannulation skills.

0 degrees, 37 degrees C and other non-standard conditions.

A look at advances in technology and how to use the latest devices.

M04 - Point of Care Testing:

What is POC Testing? Advantages, Disadvantages and Clinical

Outcomes. Comparison of POC with lab testing. 10 common POC tests.

Roles for phlebotomists performing POC Tests.

M05 - Neonates and Children:

Sample collection from new-born to pre-adult.

A detailed overview of legal principles of law including child consent and

child protection for phlebotomists. Neonatal and child blood collection equipment.

A comprehensive look at heel and finger-prick procedures.

M06 - Geriatric Patients:

The challenges of phlebotomy in older people. Understanding skin changes

Arteries and veins. Selecting an appropriate site. Sites to avoid and

“first choice” sites.

4 - Cannulae - selection and types:

A detailed look at different types of cannulas, respective benefits and

attributes. Selecting an appropriate pVAD.

5 - Complications:

Complications of pVAD insertion including examples of infiltration,

haematoma, extravasation and transfixation.

6 - VIP Score:

Understanding and using the Visual Infusion Phlebitis score.

7 - Equipment - overview:

We take a look at all essential equipment required for PIVC.

8 - PRACTICAL SESSIONS: Multiple practical sessions throughout the day.

9 - Fluids:

The importance of understanding fluids. Includes detailed overview

of: maintenance fluids, Hartmann’s solution, Colloids (and risks), blood products.

10 - Infusion Rates:

Calculating infusion rates and drops per minute.

HOME STUDY PACK

A home study pack (HSP) is provided to you and is an integral part of your total learning programme for this course.

Your HSP should be completed before starting the online course and is designed to provide you with a basic knowledge of several fundamental subject areas.

Completion of the total programme will enable you to reach your target “learning time” to achieve an award of 3 credits.
